The Walk identity (Identity) is an important part of your belonging to the worldwide movement to bring more men into sexual violence prevention. Please use the correct name and registered trademark symbol as you distribute press releases, advertisements and notices. Prepare Walk flyers, posters and other items with this in mind. The proper Identity name is:

As you work to generate publicity for your Walk, please ensure that the correct facts and information are given to interviewers, journalists and relevant people. Our media tools provide Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® Talking Points, Sample Press Releases, and hand-outs regarding how men can help prevent rape, how men are impacted by sexual assault, and why rape is a men’s issue. Please refer to and utilize these materials as you prepare spokespersons to grant interviews and speak during your program, and to assist volunteers and marchers in understanding why they are participating in the Walk.

Contact Frank Baird and Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® for comment with major media outlets, and in general whenever possible.

All of your Walk publicity must include reference to the official Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® website. The proper address is:

www.walkamileinhershoes.org

Walk gear and merchandise is available in our Store. Below are guidelines for image and identity in various gear and merchandise. These guidelines are not absolute, but if you wish to develop or design any of your own gear and merchandise for your Walk, please obtain authorization from Frank Baird and Walk a MIle in Her Shoes® prior. Please remember that our intention is not to make organizing your Walk more difficult, but to insure the integrity of the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® image and message. We are very supportive of your local efforts and creative ideas.

MEN'S MARCH GEAR & MERCHANDISE

Shoes

item5

Use bold shoes that are clearly women’s shoes. Use high heels like those available these pictured. The shoes must make a bold statement to the community and the press. The shoes should be uncomfortable to increase the wearer's awareness of differences between men's and women's experiences. These shoes are a doorway to greater understanding between men and women.

Please do not use slippers, flip flops or other kinds women's shoes for your Walk. They dilute and diminish the Walk impact and message. We understand the real effects of budget constraints, but too much constraint threatens the effectiveness of a Walk. Other shoes do not create the visual image that gets the attention we seek. Other shoes do not help men experience a significant difference between men and women's footwear. Missing the requirements of walking in 4" heels, missing the awkwardness and pain, greatly diminishes the learning opportunities available in this "simple" Walk.

Shoes can be purchased from our Store. You may also have shoes donated or purchased locally, though most shoe providers do not have the shoe sizes required by most men. Other shoe providers do not have the Natalie, the official Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® footwear. A donation is made to Walk headquarters with every pair purchased from Le Dame Footwear.

Shirts

item2 item5

Second to high-heeled shoes, shirts are the most important gear for contextualizing Walk a MIle in Her Shoes® and making the Walk photo ready for press and participants. Shirts are easy to obtain and provide. They can increase the impact of the Walk by creating a uniform effect. Anyone marching can wear a shirt, whether or not they're wearing high-heeled shoes. This increases the effectiveness of the message because the sight of the marchers becomes more formitable.

Shirts for marchers are black with white lettering. The wording is: "Put Yourself in Her Shoes™".

Shirts for staff and volunteers can be another color to distinguish them from the marchers. Some organizations have used white shirts for staff, committe coordinators or "march officials" and lavender or another color for volunteers.

The back of the shirt can be left blank or it can have a slogan advertising the local Walk organizers, beneficiaries and sponsors.

Some organizations have put the year of the Walk on the back of the shirt, others have left it blank so they can continue to use shirt stock year after year.

You can also purchase t-shirts from our Store.

Signs

item9

item1 item3 item4 item6

Use printed signs rather than hand-written. It brings a professionalism to the Walk and it’s message. We recommend using the sign on both sides of the handle so that media and onlookers can identify the message from any angle. Signs might include: “Put Yourself in Her Shoes™,” “Rape Hurts All of Us,” and others. Signs can be purchased from our Store.

Hats

item11

Black baseball caps with white lettering like that shown here both protect marchers from the sun and increase image and identity when marchers are interviewed by media and a head-only shot is used. The wording is: "Put Yourself in Her Shoes™". These and other hats can be purchased from our Store.

Banner

item12

You must have a banner at the front of your Walk. The banner announces the Walk and provides a strong front for the Walk. It can help keep Walkers together behind the banner. The wording should include the words: "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®: The International Men's March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence." Banners can be purchased from our Store.

A banner must have "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®" as the dominant text. You can have sponsors or supporters on the sign as well, but "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®" must clearly be read. If you are designing your own banner and have any questions, please contact us at info@walkamileinhershoes.org.

Drum Line & Chant Coaches

item13

A drum line helps Walkers make the mile and increases the volume of sound generated by the Walk. Chant Coaches can keep up the volume with chants like, “No Means No!” and “Stop Rape Now!” but they tend to come and go. A drum line keeps a steady volume that adds excitement to the Walk. Valley Trauma Center got a local high school drum line to lead it’s 2005 Men’s March.

Handouts

item14

Now that you have the public's attention, provide handouts describing the cause, providing statistics, and telling how men can help stop gender violence. Handouts can be obtained from some of the sources linked here or from other locations. You can move some of this information with credit to your letterhead or directly use the information from the original sources. Handouts can be carried by Walkers and given to the public as they Walk.

Information Posters

item16

Now that you have the public's attention, make sure you have information tables and displays describing the cause, providing statistics and telling how men can help stop gender violence. You can develop your own information posters or you can obtain them from some of the sources linked here or elsewhere.
